This post answers a visitor’s question about an earlier post, asking for more details and whether there is a video. I hadn’t thought of doing a video and decided to try the new Video Overview feature in Google NotebookLM to dig deeper into John Love’s experience in the House of Representatives through his final letter to constituents, which is quoted in full in Chapter 5 of Helping Build America.
I loaded the text of the letter as a source and guided the video generator with this prompt:
John Love served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1807 to 1811. Two issues dominated during Love’s tenure: renewal of the first Bank of the United States and the increasing tensions with Great Britain that would erupt into the War of 1812. The source is the text of his letter to his constituents at the end of his service. A constituent asks: Do you have any video of that? I’d care to find out more details. Focus the video on answering that question.
Love was a Democratic Republican, the party of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who replaced Jefferson as President in 1809 and presided during the War of 1812. Their politics and views on issues opposed those of the Federalist Party, which had created the Bank of the United States and was more pro-British. These differences are apparent in Love’s letter.
I created two videos with different format settings from the choices offered in the Customize Video Overview section.
- “Explainer, a structured comprehensive overview”: it produced a 7-minute narrated static slide-like presentation.
- “Cinematic, an immersive experience … through engaging visuals and storytelling”: it produced a 4-minute movie-like presentation with dramatic action.
